Groundwater Use Fees: For the past two years we have become more and more aware of the immediacy of need to regulate the amount of groundwater withdrawn in Montgomery County.  At the same time, we are recognizing how comparatively little information is available about the aquifer system itself.  The cost of water in the future dictates that we spend more effort understanding the science of the aquifer in order that our community be able to depend on a readily available supply at a reasonable price.  Consequently, for the first time since its inception, the GCD opted to increase its permit fees.  These fees will be used to improve the communication with our customer base, to expand our investigations and joint cooperation with state and Federal agencies to learn about the aquifer, and to assist in implementing the longer term solutions for water in the county.

Planning Focus Committee Meeting "Through our engineering analysis, we have determined that the amount of groundwater being used within the County is nearing or possibly even exceeded what is currently being defined as the reliable recharge rate to the aquifer. That number is about 64,000 acre-ft per year. Evidence that we are withdrawing water at a rate exceeding the rate of recharge is reflected by declining water levels in the aquifer and land subsidence in some areas of the county. The regulatory plan will require that future water supply consider options to groundwater as a source of water."

Planning Focus Committee Meeting "We are currently in a study process that will lead to a form of groundwater management for both existing and future growth in the county. The engineering consultant is studying options that will help us to develop a sound plan for regulation that is both technically feasible to administer and practically acceptable to stakeholders who will be requiring surface water for future growth in the county."
